WORKS IN PROGRESS

the L.A. PLAY (podcast: episodes 1-10 )

Before Sex in the City, there was Los Angeles in the 1980s.  It was much cheaper and much less status conscious.  We could not afford designer heels and did not drink Manhattans.  Mostly we shared scrappy joints at backyard parties or chugged wine spritzers and Henry’s at storefront theater parties.

I arrived in LA on a Greyhound bus from Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1978. California gave me permission to live my life the way I wanted to, even if I didn’t know what that would be. LA didn’t always look pretty, like in the movies.  It was a mess most of the time,  but we partied in the streets where the movies were made, while living in our own movies.  Before internet and selfies.

The L.A. Play started percolating for me upon my return after 15 years of living around the world. I drove back to LA, but I didn’t know why. But while driving in LA, I was greeted at every turn and corner, with a story. A story about having a relationship with L.A., as a young woman in LA, in the 1980s.

Sydonia of the Otherworld (screenplay)

A rewrite of a play I researched in 2005 while visiting western border areas of Poland as Guest Artist and discovering the tale of the Pomeranian medicine woman/witch, Sydonia.

Seeking Rabi’a

This project is an opportunity for me to draw on my academic research on women and religion through the story of female Sufi saint, Rabi’a, exploring ideas of sacredness, holiness, spirituality and experiencing the divine as perceived and experienced through three characters connecting to her work during different historical periods.

Jęzik Rodzimy: Language & Love in My Mother-Tongue

“My mother-tongue is Polish, although my adult tongue has been formed by the English language. In this way, when I speak Polish, I am always the four year old girl trying to learn the language of a new world.”
